Project
title:
Increase understanding of the status of Australian snubfin and Indo‐Pacific humpback dolphins within Port Curtis and Port
Alma

The purpose of this project is ‘to increase the understanding of the status of the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin and the Australian snubfin dolphin in the Port Curtis and Port Alma regions by considering and extending on previous baseline programs over the period 2014-2016. Such programs include: mark-recapture; population genetics; toxicology; and conducting stable isotope analyses to obtain information on the
diets of these species.’

Location
: 23 Mc Bean Street Yeppoon 4703 QLD Australia. However based on the weather forecast we will move between different locations along the east coast such as Gladstone, Rockhampton, Repulse Bay and Airlie Beach.

Date: 1-July to 7-September 2014 (volunteer must commit for the full period, but arrival up to 4 days past the first of July are accepted)

 Duties:
- Assisting with boat-based photo-identification surveys of bottlenose dolphins, including operating small vessel during surveys, collecting environmental, location, and behavioural data for dolphin groups. Expect early starts, long days up to 12 hours on the water for multiple consecutive days, and up to a week between days off;
- Photo-identification of dolphins in the lab and data entry in a web based database specifically built for the project.

Prerequisites:
- Enthusiasm for field work on a boat is essential (long hours and natural environment conditions);
- Ability to work in a team environment;
- Experience of photo-ID is preferred but not a requirement;
- Good health and physical conditions.

Expenses: This is an unpaid position. However accommodation and food expenses will be covered by the project.
