The CCP is the development of the longest ongoing study on humpback and snubfin dolphin in Australian waters.
Daniele Cagnazzi have been involved in the study of cetaceans in Australia for almost a decade. The Capricorn Cetacean Project was
established only in 2012, following the appointment of Dr. Daniele Cagnazzi as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Marine Ecology Research Centre. The Capricorn Cetacean Project is the development of an existing study on Australian humpback and snubfin dolphins (conducted by Daniele Cagnazzi since 2005) into a larger multidisciplinary project with the primary aim to investigate deeper into the interactions between dolphins and coastal anthropogenic activities
The vision for the next future is to see the CCP growing into a larger group by increasing collaboration with Australian and internationl researchers and by giving the opportunity to new students to undertake studies on cetaceans.
Mission statement
The overall aim of CCP is the conservation and management of cetaceans in Central Queensland and to use this knowledge obtained in this area to help the conservation and management of cetaceans around the world. We conduct rigorous applied and empirical indipendnt research that provides industry and government with the most accurate and objecitve information on cetaceans in this region.
Areas of research
CCP has five core research areas:
1) cetacean population biology and behavioural ecology
2) interactions between cetaceans and their ecosystems
3) assessment of anthropogenic impacts on cetaceans.
4) connection between bioaccumulation and cetaceans' health
5) population viabiity models to assess the likely outcomes of different uncertainties, threats and management scenario.
To do so CCP has started collaboaration with various international researchers, among the most experts in their fields: M. Krützen (Uni. of Zürich), G. Parra (Flinders Uni. of SA), S. Allen (Murdoch Uni.), C. Fossi (Uni. of Siena).
